Carolyn Haman
1930 ~ 2024

With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of Carolyn Haman on December 2, 2024. Carolyn was a truly extraordinary person whose boundless passion for life and unwavering love for her second family—her figure skating community—touched the lives of so many. A role model both on and off the ice, Carolyn left an indelible mark on the sport and those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Carolyn’s deep commitment to figure skating and her cherished Dallas Figure Skating Club (DFSC) was unmatched. A proud member for 60 years, she founded the annual Skate Dallas competition in 1981 and dedicated herself to serving the club in numerous capacities, including Test Chair, President, and Board of Directors member. Her contributions extended beyond leadership roles; she was a cornerstone of the club’s growth and spirit.

For her 80th birthday, a fellow U.S. Figure Skating official honored her legacy by initiating the Carolyn Haman Helping Hands (CHHH) fund. This hardship fund embodies Carolyn’s generous spirit, assisting countless Dallas FSC skaters in need—whether overcoming injuries without insurance, recovering lost skates, or adjusting to a growing skater’s rapid need for new equipment. Her vision and compassion turned challenges into opportunities for so many in her skating family.

Carolyn’s influence extended far beyond Dallas. She devoted years to U.S. Figure Skating committees, serving as Chief Referee for numerous competitions across Florida, Michigan, and many Regional and Sectional events. In the days before computerized registrations, her tireless efforts ensured the smooth operation of events. Carolyn was also a nurturing mentor to aspiring judges, many of whom rose to national prominence thanks to her guidance and encouragement.

The Dallas FSC flourished under Carolyn’s leadership, growing to become the 4th largest figure skating club in the United States. Her joy for the sport was infectious, and her legacy is celebrated annually through the Carolyn Haman Spirit of Skate Dallas award. This prestigious honor is given to a juvenile-level skater who exemplifies the love and dedication to figure skating that Carolyn embodied.

Carolyn’s remarkable contributions to figure skating were recognized nationally when she received the 13th annual U.S. Figure Skating Jimmy Disbrow Award in 2016. This honor, reserved for those who demonstrate unparalleled dedication, selflessness, and volunteerism, was a fitting tribute to her unwavering commitment to the sport she loved.

It was a true privilege to volunteer and officiate alongside Carolyn. Her wisdom, kindness, and unwavering dedication inspired all who knew her. The skating community has lost a treasured leader, but her legacy will continue to shine brightly in every blade that touches the ice and every heart she inspired. Rest in peace, Carolyn. You will be deeply missed.
